In all the languages that I have heard of there are always tons of ways to greet somebody depending on who you are addressing, and whether you want to be informal or not.
And you will guess that French is not an exception to the rule.
Say « bonjour madame/ monsieur/ mademoiselle » if you want to sound polite and just « bonjour » to someone you know a little. If you are on friendly terms with someone just use « salut! » (hi).
In French, there is no use of « good afternoon » or »good morning ». We just use:
– « bonjour » (day time)
– « bonsoir » (evening time)
example: « good morning Paul », « good afternoon Paul » will be translated « bonjour Paul » in both cases.
Do you know when you will use « salut« ?
=> You use « salut » either to say hello or goodbye (bye) to a friend (informal use).
Do you know the difference between « au revoir » and « bonsoir« ?
=> « au revoir » means « goodbye » and « bonsoir » means « good night ».
